SNOBS – a social media site for business women launches

Snobs - Social Media StoryNewcastle media identity Carlee Potter has launched SNOBS, a social media site for business women. Carlee describes SNOBS as “an online magazine and social network for businesswomen. It is a resource for news, information and advice where career-driven women can connect with fresh industry contacts and keep in touch with valued friends.”

A former Newcastle radio announcer (NEWFM and NXFM) and freelance journalist (Sun Herald and Ralph), Carlee has moved boldly into the digital publishing world with SNOBS. The site mixes conventional magazine-style columns and social events coverage with interactive events calendars, citizen journalism and networking opportunities.

Carlee approached Sticky Digital earlier this year with her vision for an online magazine, which rapidly evolved into a very social media focused site. The agency has been extremely excited to assist in the creation of SNOBS and will be involved in the ongoing evolution of the site as it continues to introduce more networking facilities. Its been a brave move and Carlee should be applauded for her vision.

Businesses targeting upwardly mobile business women should strongly consider advertising on SNOBS. It is an excellent opportunity to reach this demographic with a cost-effective online approach. We expect SNOBS audience to grow rapidly.

Contributors already include Kim Bauer of NXFM, fashion designer Alex Norrie and Kerryn Atkinson of Greater Union.

While Carlee is based in Newcastle and SNOBS has launched with a slightly Newcastle flavour, she intends for the site to be a truly national networking and news resource for Australian business women. If you wish to contribute to SNOBS or have ideas for SNOBS in your area please don’t hesitate to contact Carlee.

  2. Haha; Heidi Pollard! You have no idea how many people have said to me (since I started developing my business plan for SNOBS): “You know who you really should meet – Heidi Pollard.”
I signed up for your newsletters about 3 months ago, too, so I kinda feel like I already know you
Anyway, how about I reply to you personally and then we can officially arrange to meet…

  4. SNOBS is NOT a social media site.

Is a blog with a flickr gallery a social media site?

  5. “John Doe” you might be surprised that we don’t delete negative comments. In our opinion opening yourself up to comments (and potential criticism) is part of the social media ethos. Making snarky comments anonymously is not good social media conduct however….especially when its so easy to track it back to your workplace (BTW I went to school with The Chief, say hi from me).

Anyway, SNOBS is well on the way to being a good social media business in our opinion. It has only recently launched and has many initiatives still on the way but its already off to a good start.

Rather than being the voice of one person, it is inviting numerous contributors and encouraging citizen journalism.

The site is meant to be a discussion piece for it target market, inviting comment and further contribution.

SNOBS allows people to register events on its calender.

SNOBS has a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.

Wikipedia describes social media as: “primarily Internet-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings. The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and “building” of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences.”

SNOBS qualifies on all counts, and will continue to evolve in this arena. Lets encourage a local lady for taking the big step into the brave new work of online publishing and social media.

Please feel free to leave your real name and address in the future, we are happy to reply and would even suggest that maybe we should sit down for a coffee and discussion on the industry some time, seriously…we mean it.

    Cheers.
