This week Sticky turns 7 and its a good time to pause and look back on the exciting ride we’ve had.
Back in 2005 the agency (Newcastle’s longest running) changed ownership and we renamed it Sticky to reflect the intention to create advertising and marketing that attracts potential customers for our clients and makes them, well, Stick.
In the years that followed the digital revolution took hold and it was clear that advertising, marketing and the agency model were in for a major shake up. We steadily transitioned from creating advertising campaigns for mainly Newcastle based clients to developing digital marketing strategies for clients in around Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
We’ve been fortunate enough to work with a vast array of fascinating clients like Airds, Caltex, Terry White Chemists, Companion Credit Union, Community CPS, Colliers International, Promax, Australian Cancer Research Foundation, PRD Nationwide, Kinetic Information Systems, World Society for the Protection of Animals, Countrytell, Lake Macquarie City Council, Hunter Sports Group and many more.
We have also been an agency willing to experiment with new ideas and business models, some short-lived, others ongoing. We launched a TV / Web advertising business called Hunter’s Best which was fun while it lasted. NLYZR was developed in-house to become an internationally popular Search Engine Optimisation tool. The free version of NLYZR has been used by thousands of businesses around the world over the last 3 years while exactly a year ago we launched the commercial subscription version of NLYZR which has become a good business in its own right.
In early 2011 we launched an online magazine called Urban Insider which has grown to become one of the most popular sites in the Hunter Region. Urban Insider is an experiment in crowd sourcing and citizen journalism in order to explore alternative publishing models. We haven’t “monetized” it yet but it has certainly developed a strong audience.
Sticky is proud to have helped foster local initiatives such as the Newcastle Coffee Morning digital meetups, The Lunaticks Society and now Digital Newcastle. We didn’t launch these (Gordon Whitehead is the driver of these but they mostly evolved from conversations in our office) but we have been strong supporters and will continue to be due to our belief that growing the market and encouraging innovative digital thinking in the region is vital.
In 2012, 7 years on, Sticky is a very different beast. We still do some traditional media campaigns where we feel the fit is right. We develop digital marketing strategies for a wide range of organisations, large and small, across the country. We continue to launch start-up businesses, learning from our mistakes and successes, because we feel this makes us more valuable to our clients.
Sticky is committed to continual (r)evolution: Old ad agency -> new ad agency -> digital agency -> lean start-up incubator.
And there’s much more to come. Very soon we’ll announce our latest start-up, unveil a national campaign for a cutting-edge tech company and partner with another industry group for a major tilt at an e-commerce venture. The future is exciting.
